I had a friend rebuild the carb on my 47 M.He told me he placed all the settings according to the paper that came with the kit.I put it on and after the 2nd try it fired up.I took it down the driveway it started dying then it smoothed out for a little while. I tried to put in in 5th gear at full throttle going down the road it coughed spit and sputtered then almost shut off.I had to sit for a minute to let the engine smooth out. When climbing a small hill in 3rd and 4th it does the same thing. Now it sat overnite and its dripping gas where the choke rod hooks onto plus out of the brass screw with the gasket. I pulled the air cleaner tube off and gas poured out of there also.Sounds like the float isnt set right.?? I did shut the fuel off if you are wondering.hahaha.Its my 1st tractor and iam trying to learn all i can.

Do you have to remove the whole carb off the tractor or can you just remove the bottom half to adjust the float?

You have a couple of different things going on here. Float may be set too high, but most likely the needle and seat is leaking. That is a constant problem with new parts now days. Float could be hanging up on sides of bowl, pin could be too tight in float hinge. Far as spitting and sputtering, might just be you need to back out the load adjustment. That is the needle on bottom. Just rev engine full throttle, screw it in until it starts to lean out and then back it out until smooth, and give it a half turn more out. For the leak, I always coin or stake the seat but then the guy who repaired it for you should know about that. Although, leak could be just a little crap that got under needle, make sure you have good screen in sediment bowl, or the proper inline filter, made for gravity flow systems.

I just recently pulled the bottom of my carb off while it was on the tractor, I free'd up my needle valve and mine fired right up (mine was a lack of gas problem) I dont have the choke hooked up as mine didnt even need it to fire up.

You could probably adjust it with the bottom off although I tell you with a couple linkages, a hose and two nuts to loosen, I just pull the whole thing and check the needle and seat for issues too. If you are worried about the needle leaking you can put a little gas in her and lay clean paper under it and watch for drips. Make sure your drain screen is clear or remove the air cleaner hose so any leakage can escape onto the paper.
