Pics from 2008 Hay Season

Here's some pics from a couple years ago of my son and father-in-law baling up some square bales with my old IH 37. Father-in-Law is giving my son some baling lessons.
After following behind a couple of those IH balers when I was a kid, I swore I never would own one in my life because of all the break downs the farmers I worked for had. Well, this one come up for $250 and my wifes family had one in the weeds for parts,so I thought I would give it a try. It was the best investment I ever made. A little welding on the bale chamber, new twine knives and a lot of grease and it has run like a champ. As you can tell from the pics it could use the plunger knives sharpened and clearances set, but a little fuzz on a bale doesn't bother me.

Scott; nice sharp photos, thanks for sharing. I have fond memories of haying on my late uncles farm, his brand was New Holland though behind an 860 Ford and once in a blue moon, the 8N did the job. Great to see a youngster sporting a 4-H t-shirt, such a good organization for young people to get involved in and the more you are involved, the greater the opportunities get. Imagine it was a good day for all three of you.

I think a lot of the bad reputation on the IH balers were due to the McCormick 45 balers. Dad bought one (his first baler) back in late 60's or very early 70's, and it was a nightmare, especially for a kid who was made to ride on those twine boxes and tie bad knots. Last time I saw that baler it was sitting where he parked it. I kept most of dads equipment, but had no use for that baler. It had sunk into the ground to the point I could not pull it loose (did not try too hard) or it would have gone to the scrap man after dad passed on.

Nice photos - I seem to remember black storm clouds on the horizon whenever we had hay down - Looks like you had a good day -

We had a couple old IH balers back when and the most important thing I could remember was my dad telling me, son don't crowd it. If you hurry it too much you'll wind up with no twine on the bales. He was right. Just take; your time. Bernie Steffen
