M Oil Filter Base Size

Is there a difference in early M and later M oil filter base sizes? I have a early 41' with a big base and tall canister. I bought the spin on filter conversion kit today from my local dealer, but it does not even come close to fitting the filter base. It is way too small in diameter. According Case/IH online, the H & M take the same filter, so I would think there must have been a change somewhere along the line. Thanks!
 
Early M's, like 41 have a much larger oil filter base and filter. You could get a base off a later M or 400 etc.

Yes, the early M's require a different part number, somewhere here you will find the specific part numbers but I believe it started 44 and up for the newer filter.
 
All H's and the M's beginning with SN 59394 up have the same base. Earlier M cases had a different part number.
 
The serial number break for the filter base is at 59393 - 59394. That puts it near the end of 1942 production.

Common mistake to confuse tractor and engine serial numbers. Most engine parts use engine serial numbers. When IH listed a serial break the prefix FBKM is used for engine serial number parts and FBK for chassis parts. Think FBKM 59394 was first used in a tractor built in march of 1943.
