Just bought a nice 460 from my father in law. He had a guy switch it over to electric ignition a year or so ago. Ever since, seems to drain the battery. I started it the other day and the amp gauge did not move, then all of a sudden it went all the way to the right, then slowly went back to center. I had to put the charger on for a couple hours to get it to start. Any ideas of what to look for. Not use to being around the red tractors. Thanks for any help.

What you describe is normal for a single wire hook up alternator. Some are worse than others but they all have a battery drain when not in use. The amp gauge jumping up is typical of what happens when the alternator RPMs get high enough for charging to start.

Install a master switch in the ground cable as this will isolate the battery from being grounded. The military has used this for years
on their vehicles. No one else can get the vehicle started. Hal
PS: Just make sure you put the master switch in the off position when you're finished for the day.

Owen below is correct. The likely problem is an alternator exciter current leak. A replacement alternator with 3 wire setup is an easy fix, and will charge as soon as the tractor is started. The electronic ignition is not involved with the issue. Jim
Bobs nice solutions

Thanks guys, I knew I could count on someone to help. I only get to the farm every so often, will check it out next time I get out there. Thanks again.
