torque amplifier.... afraid he broke it

This is a little long but I could sure use your help. My best friend bought a 504 a few weeks ago. He's not very mechanical so I end up working on all his stuff. I was cutting hay today and it was running great. He relieved me after he got off work and now it has a knocking sound in the area of the amplifier. It stops if I push the clutch completely in. I asked him how he was shifting the hi-lo and it sounds like he was jaming it into hi pretty hard. What do you think the noise is and could it be anything else like low on hydraulic oil? I dose leak a some but I dont even know where to check it or what to put in if it is low.

Thanks so much for your help.

You should snap the TA in and out quickly.

Sounds to me like one of the transmission gears is chipped. The tranny is directly behind the TA. In fact, the transmission constant mesh gear is part of the TA.

Do you get clicking in all gears?

We never had one of these, but the 450/MTA series would get noisy when the splines in the pressure plate for the live power were getting worn [badly]. Could even be clutch splines worn.

You can't "jam" the TA into high.

The fastest you can possibly do it is if you trip the release with your finger and let the lever fly forward. That still won't hurt the TA.

Thanks everyone! i feel better that its probably not the T/A. But I'm still lost. It doesn't sound right for a chipped tooth. Its more of a low knock sound. Definitely in the drive train and its louder if under load like going up a hill, if just sitting its almost silent. And it wasn't there at all until about half way through the hay cutting. The field is all level and there wasn't any mishap or problem that could have put extra stress on it. So guess I'll take the top cover off and have a look. Dont suppose anyone has some pics or digrams that could be sent over the net? I'll suggest he get an IT but that'll probably be a while in coming..

Thanks again for all your great advice. This is the most helpful place on the net.

The center could be getting loose on the clutch disc. The rivets could be working loose & allowing the slop & noise. Not much way to check this except putting tractor in high gear & with engine off, rock the rear wheels back & forth & listen for noise up at the clutch department [2 guys needed].

Go to caseih.com and do a search for parts and put the model number in. Everything you would want to see. Then have him get an IT manual for it if it is going to be a Fix Or Repair Daily type of tractor like all the olds ones are.
