IH 674 hyd problems. Something new to me

My son bought a IH 674 three weeks ago. It does not have much hyd pressure. Won't lift much on the 3pt or aux outlets. Won't budge a round hay bale on the 3pt. Also hard to steering. This is the first time I have been around 74 series tractors. I have always been around 560's , 06-56-66-86 series tractors. Are the hyd pumps inside the trans or accessable like the 06 thru 86 series? Guess they only have one pump that the steering runs off also? Also, what is the difference between the 674 and 684? I am guessing the hyd pump is bad or could it be something else on these tractors, O ring somewhere, control valve???

There is only one pump. The problem could be as easy as old hydraulic oil & a plugged up hydraulic filter. There"s a few guys here that know these inside & out, I"m sure they"ll add a few things.

On that series, my first guess would be the parking brake disintegrating and plugging the filter, second guess would be the service brakes doing the same thing, third guess would be both at once.

Hi, it have only one pump for hydrolic system, include the pto, brake and steering. It have a flow-divider valve that allow 3 gallon to the steering, the steering return goes to the pto, cooler and brake. First check, the oil level, filter, flow-divider, then the pump. The filter is on the left side, in front of the rear axle. Make sure the by-pass valve, in the filter cover, is in the cover and the filter element is toward the housing. The flow-divider is under the filter, remove the large plug, it have a spring and a spool, the spool should be free in the bore, if not,you dont have enough oil flow for all the system. For the pump, remove the housing plate, where the filter is bolted, and the pump is inside. Hope this help. Bernard le mecano Quebec Canada

Hello Bernard, My brother and I have been working on this same tracktor with some of the same simtoms. It busted the pump housing the first time. We replaced the pump with a new one. When we started it up to check the pressure the hydraulics work for a little while then stopped working. We removed the pump and itt had blown the pressure side o-ring and the pump cover seal. It seems like the pump is deadheading. We have ckecked the flow divider valve and the releife valve. Also check the dump valve under the seat. Do you have any ideas or suggestions as to what to check next ?

Thanks in advance
Greg

An early 684 is almost the same as a 674.

You could get a fwa 684, but not a fwa 674.

A late 684 almost the same, but H shift pattern etc.
