cub trans/final drive noise.

i know this subject has come up not to long ago, but here goes again. just got my 53 cub running after a mayjor engine/trans/final drive o/h. engine runs like a top. trans. had 4 new bearings and differental was shimmed as per IH shop manual. both final drive assemblies were totally disassembled and cleaned and reassembled with new seals. all required shimming of f/d bearings was carried out as per manual. now when i drive the tractor the trans.or l/h final drive makes a loud noise. seems to sound worse when turning to right or in reverse. no problem with trans. going into any gear or with pto engaugment. did fill trans with hyguad trans/hyd. fluid instead od 90wt. gear oil. any insite into my delima? thanks for the dry sholder. d.coleman

I am not a mechanic at all. I had an old mechanic rebuild my Cub transmission. Afterward it made more noise than before. I complained. He told me to work it awhile. Sure enough after some use it quieted down. That is my only idea for your problem. Good luck!

You technically should be running gear oil in your trans, but I agree BRM. Mine 49 did the same thing, and its quiter now than it was, but it still hollers a little, I just dont run that tractor that much.

First off dump the oil and put in SAE 90 gear lube.

Second off did you put gear lube in the finals too? If you drained them they need to be refilled separately.

thanks for replies. will change the trans. fluid to 90wt., did put 90wt. in both final drives after reassembly. it was apparent that the trans. had been into prior to me aquiring the tractor, but was unable to drive it when i got it due to stuck engine. got the tractor almost free of cost(traded items i no longer needed for it and a "C" allis chalmers). oh well it is all in the fun of the hobby. thanks again. d.coleman

I understand that sometimes when you reshim the transmission bevel gears that they can make noise as they were originally worn in with some other meshing distance. As someone else said, may be best to drive it a little to see if it gets better. My Cub transmission case was broken out on the bottom and someone epoxied it back together. I replaced the case and had to reshim the bevel gears. I thought it was a pain to do, but mine runs quiet with 90 weight oil. Roger

Check the bolts on the wheel quite ofte they are loose and it sounds like its the final drive. Been there done that.
