Smokin' 340U

The breather on top of the valve cover smokes sometimes, but not others. Some mention on this site that it has to do with the weight of the oil in the air cleaner. But if the engine is sucking oil out of the air cleaner into the combustion chambers, the smoke would come out of the exhaust, wouldn't it? The engine does not burn oil, the exhaust is clean. Any idea why it's smokin? As always, appreciate the advice.

Its blow-by combustion gasses. When an engine runs some combustion gasses leak past the rings into the crankcase. A small amount is totally normal. You have nothing to worry about unless its putting out a cloud of smoke that would indicate the engine might need an overhaul.

I agree with Scott, especially when it is damp out, and condensation can get into the crank case. It is then heated off and out the vent until it is gone. If you are not loosing coolant, and not burning excessive oil, I would ignore it. Jim
