Cub Lo-Boy Elec Problem

I recently restored a "55 Cub Lo-Boy. It had already had a 12volt conversion with an alternator and it ran great. Of course when I put it back together as it was before, I get a spark at the dashboard when I go to move the rod to the starter. Even with the on/off switch off at the dash, if I push on the dash or try to move the starter rod, I get a nice spark. Any ideas? All new paint so...dash not grounded?

Sounds like you have a short in back of the dash or a bad connection back there. Look for the spot where the arcing is taking place. The fix will be evident.

Just from my own experience but a spark when you pull the starter followed by a dead tractor usually is an issue with a ground. I would look for dead shorts behind the dash and also make sure I didn't paint over/interfere with any ground connections.

I agree, the system should be grounded. I would bet that a component in the box is touching the housing, and the housing is not grounded.
It should be, and it should not have a short inside it. Possible contact between a terminal and the box. Jim
