856 D engine noise

This sounds like a collapsed hydf.lifter but I know it does not have these. Valve adj. is correct,I find no bent or broken push rods, rocker arms and-or valve springs. I hear this at an idle speed, some times the noise is there and then goes away and then at times it is louder than other times. I can not pin point the cyl. by useing a styethescope. Could this be carbon on top of piston that may be hitting the head? Are these engines noted for camshaft problems? Sure has me baffeld.

My 1256 has done this for 10 years(before and after an overhaul)knocks at idle-smoothes out athigher RPM and load--drives me crazy! I even took it to a professional shop to find the knock--no luck.If it was'gonna blow',it would have long ago.

Can you hear the noise when you are cranking it over with the starter with throttle shut down.May have to put your ear to the oil filler while doing this. If so, you have an engine problem. If not, you may have an injection nozzle problem. Do you see any sign of a puff or uneven fumes out of crankcase breather tube, would indicate piston problems. I would remove one oil filter and inspect for any metalic material. Also, do not over look the possibility of an injection pipe touching some other metal as that will make them sound like an engine knock sometimes.
