1976 Cub Hydraulic Problem/Noise

I have a 1976 1 owner Cub that has mowed grass all its life. The tractor is in excellent shape but the hydraulics make a high pitched "whining/whistling" noise. The hydraulics are very strong and precise, they work great except for this loud noise. I have noticed that the front half of the hydraulic lines (from middle to pump) there is a vibration in the lines when you touch them. The back half of the lines (from middle to resivoir) there really isn't any vibration. To me it sounds as if the vibration is where the sound is coming from. What do you guys think? Do you think this might be the problem to the noise? Thanks alot!!

Here is a picture of the 1976 Cub when we brought it home along with a picture of the 1959 model we got. Sorry for the bad cell phone picture. The 1959 model currently is for sale with a full set of cultivators that are painted IH Blue. I have more pictures of the 1959 if anyone is intrested. Thanks for all of your help guys.

Nice tractor .As far as the noise well did you change the hydrolic fluid and clean the filter screen? that would be the first thing i would try. It could also be air in the hydrolic lines and might just have to be bled. Try changing the oil first.

Erik,

Thats what I was thinking (filter screen). But I've looked through the service manual and the only screen I've found is located at the rear (dash side) of the hyd resivoir. It doesnt seem to be one that is easily serviceable. Is there another screen that I am not aware of? Thanks so much.

Yeh your right that filter is hard to get at. I was thinking of the 140 filter and that one is easy to get at. Well i would still start with the oil and filter if you can get it out. let me know how you make out. Erik..

Thanks Erik. Where is the filter located on the 140? we have a few of them as well as Super A's. I'd like to know so I can check and clean them all. One of our Super A's has a good lift, however, when you try to stop it in a certain position, it just keeps going. haha, kinda annoying when trying to position equipment.

The filter on the 140 is just below the filer plug. Just remove the four cap screws on a square plate you cant miss it there is only one square plate there with four bolts in it. That plate is part of the filter and it will just pull right out. You will have to drain the oil first. Thats the first thing i do when i get a 140 or super A or C. I have two 140s and a 1975 Cub. Erik..

Don't know whether this would work but maybe worth a try. Loosen the bolts on the plumbing block to the pump and drain some of the oil from the lines with the view that maybe there is some air trapped in the lines. Personally, I do not see how this could be but its worth a try. Make sure you have the reservoir topped off when you do this so you do not introduce more air into the system.

Erik thanks so much for al of your expertise!! Do you have a possible solution to the problem I'm having with my Super A hydraulics?

Challenger, I'm not sure if it will hep either. I can also post a video of it running so you all can hear the noise.
