Can anyone tell me why one of the four fine threaded bolts used for bolting on steering arm to a M farmall has a raised lump on the bolt head? Does it need to be put back in a specifis hole???? Thanks in advance...

That is an original IH bolt. The others must have been replaced. Look around your tractor you should see other bolts with that raised center.

On a narrow front its used in the front right hole and acts as a steering stop. If you have a steering arm like on a wide front that bolt is not used.

i was talking to a friend of mine and he had said he too had noticed this one odd bolt on the same part, I guess when I say a raised bump I mean about a 1/2" or so taller than the others on the bolt face and was wondering if it was used for a stop or something and needed to be put back in a certain spot because of this???

That's what I thought, I have a Swartz front that I am putting on which I beleive requires all four bolts and it should'nt matter where this bolt goes should it???

D. Slater is correct as to it being a steering stop bolt. If you look there's a slot where the bolt head "hump" travels in that prevents the operator from turning the front wheels to far in either direction

Leave that stop bolt out when ya mount the wide front because the stops are built into the front end on your Swartz.

Just use a regular bolt.
