rust dust in the gas tank

I have a 46 M There is a lot rust dust in the gas tank now that I have drained all the gas and am preparing for paint. Would anyone have any tips on how to remove this dust and get the tank pretty clean again, before I paint and remount it back on the tractor. It has enough dust that I feel I will be replacing fuel filters about ever other week for a long time. Thanks all

Well #1 that is what the sediment bowl and screen is made for. I have a D-17 that has that problem and has for years and I never have much problem with it if I empty the sediment bowl about once a day when I'm working it.
Things you can do are take a hand full of say 1/2 inch nuts and drop them in and shake the heck out of the tank then flush. Make sure you count how many went in so you know you get them all back out. Also giving it a meratic (sp) acid flush can some times help but if it is real thin it also might open up a hole. Or you could line it

You can use a product called Kreem to line your tank if it leaks or is really rusty. I had a Super C that sat for about 40 years, and I rinsed it out with water, reinstalled the tank, and just kept watching and cleaning the bowl. It cleaned up real well.

I have a 400 diesel that had loads of rust in the fuel tank. So much that it would plug up that lines after about 5 minutes in the field. I took a magnet from the pan of an automotive transmission, hooked a 2-foot piece of wire to it and dropped it in the tank. I drove it around the field for a few minutes, stopped, removed the magnet, and removed the rust from the magnet. After repeating this about 10 times, there was very little rust to remove from the magnet. I've run it for about 2 years since then and it hasn't given me any trouble.

Lots of posts and threads in the archives. Do a search on gas tank rust. Phosphoric acid is the best stuff for rust. Then seal it with with wd40. Product with the highest concentration of Phosphoric acid is Behr concrete and masonry etcher from home cheapo and places. Comes in a gallon jug and can be diluted with water. Sometimes you have to try a heavy dose of muratic acid for big rust and it is cheaper but probably not necessary for rust dust.

Not sure if anything is a permanent fix except the tank coatings. I've got my carb torn down now after reacidizing the bottom of the tank for a couple days and flushing it with a gallon or two of gas. My carb even started rusting. Got it in acid now.

You can put a piece of screen or rubber hose over the end of the sediment bowl/bushing going up into the gas tank to keep the bottom dwelling crud from getting into the line.

First I've heard of using a magnet to catch rust. I may fish one into the bottom of my tank and leave it.
