Question on MD Starting Valve Covers.

I have 2, 8 228 DF heads (both cracked naturally) that have different Starting Valve Covers (that go on top of the start valve) on each head. The parts manual states the 46 210 D for engine S/N 501 to 3720 and 250 535 R1 for S/N 3721 up. Neither has a part number on it anywhere. The size of one is 1.198" long by 1.242" Dia while the other is 1.058 long by 1.246 Dia. Does anybody know which size is which part number? Any assistance would be a great help.

One more question. Would anybody know the differences between a 8 228 D head and a 260 869 R51 head other than the serial number splits? Thanks.
 
I am not sure about your first part of the question,
but the second part i can answer. I went though the
same thing with my SMD. All heads from the MD-450D
are the same, with the exception that the very last
450D's had a slightly thicker casting. This does not
change the performance.
