Cub with a knock at front of engine

I am bringing home a new toy tomorrow and I bought it with a knock coming from the front portion of the engine. It absolutely does not smoke at all and runs smooth. Could this be something other than a rod bearing? I would think a stuck wrist pin or sloppy piston would smoke. Other than the knock it runs and drives great. I didn't write down the serial number but it is in the 43000 range. Any thoughts? I'll know more tomorrow when it hits the Hollow.

Some times a loose fan belt will make a knocking sound at certain engine speeds. Doesn't cost much to fix either.

check the crank pully on the front. a buddy bough a ac b on a sale that had a knock and it was a loose crank pully. good luck. Bob

My '57 had a low speed knock that went away above idle speed. I had a chance to buy a good newer engine and held on to the old one for awhile to look into later. Sold it to an acquaintence looking for a good block. He tore it down and the crank was broken in two just ahead of the front main. He replaced the crank and has a sweet running engine.

My H had a similar knock...turned out to be too much play between the crank gear and the camshaft gear. I replaced the cam gear and all was well.

check very carefully for movement of crank pulley. I have heard of 2 different instances of crankshaft being broken between form rod journal and main, but still turning pulley.
