Where was my M built

My grandson is restoring a 1948 farmall m for the stock shows. where can we find when and where the tractor was built, and delivered to. or any other history.
 
If there is an L in front of a 6 digit number it was Louisville KY. If none, it was the chicago area plant (Rock Island, Ill)
Unless you know the Previous Owner, it is usually not possible to trace the tractor. Many records were lost within the ownership changes, and with dealership practices and records being tossed. Jim
 
You gotta remember that there was no such thing as the internet, and computerized record keeping was just a pipe dream in 1948. It's not like you can run a CARFAX on your tractor...

Records were paper, and a lot of IH dealers have closed since 1948. Odds are the original dealer is gone, along with the paperwork.

Your only shot is to trace the tractor through its previous owners, and hope the original owner is still around AND either has the paper work or a good story to tell you.
