Farmall C belt pulley elimination

On a Farmall C, can just the belt pulley shaft and bearings be removed from the housing and a plate made to cover up the hole in housing?

We would like to eliminate the belt pulley fro safety reason.

Thanks

Part of me wants to say, "Huh?!?!?" The rest of me makes me ask whether we are thinking of the same thing. And what the safety considerations are.

If you're talking about the pulley at the front end of the crankshaft, the one that drives the fan, no.

The bearing can never go. It takes part of the load of the piston rods turning the crank. Without it, you'll have a big mess in a hurry.

As far as finding another way to do it that saves the bearing but eliminates the pulley, no. You need that fan. An unmodified C would not have had a water pump. It was a thermosiphon system, that relied on the fan (driven by the crank pulley) to draw air across it in sufficient quantity to cool the engine. Without the crank pulley, how would you drive the fan?

Without a fan, you'd still be only capable of short runs even with a water pump, which would require a belt to drive it.

And I haven't even started on how you would drive the generator, assuming you want one.

What are you trying to accomplish? What are the safety concerns?

I think he is referring to the flat belt pulley which is used with a 6" wide belt or the like to operate remote machinery like a mill or such. This seems like a reasonable question to me but I do not know the answer.

I believe he is talking about the flat-belt pulley on the rear. There are a couple of options. One is to get a sleeve to replace the pulley, you just pull the pulley off and put the sleeve on and put the bolt and washer back in.

Second option it to remove the entire angle drive, there is a cast iron cover made for that. Check a salvage yard. I believe the Super A - 140 would use the same cover. It is more than a simple plate, the shaft protrudes at the rear so the plate has to be domed in the center. Check the parts book at the Case/IH site and you will see the options.

I think you are talking about the flat belt pulley at the back of the tractor. If you want to remove just the pulley and leave the shaft, just unbolt the pulley and remove it. You need a sleeve to cover the exposed splined shaft which is retained by a heavy washer and the bolt that held on the pulley. If you don't put the retainer sheeve on, you will eventually loose the bushing that is on the shaft that the seal runs on. If you want to remove the entire pulley assembly, get yourself a cover (Ih made those for tractors with the PTO, but without the belt pulley) for the rear of the PTO set up. Remove the 4 bolts that hold on the belt pulley gear box and replace it with the cover and a gasket. There are shims in there now that set the gear lash. The gasket will replace the shims. You may also want to remove the drive gear off the shaft that drives the belt pulley. If you plan to sell the pulley assembly, the person that buys it will likely want the gear. If the gear is removed, you will need to replace it on the shaft with a spacer sleeve.

I have a similar situation and removed the pulley in order to install a 3 point. I now have gear oil leaking out the seal. Is there a sleeve that can be purchased to slide on to stop the leak? What type of a sleeve is needed? It seems I do not have the bushing. I don't recall seeing the bushing. Thanks.

If you did not put a retainer on when you removed the pulley, the bushing probably worked off and now you have a gap between the shaft and seal. If you remove the three bolts holding on the seal holder and pull if off, you will see the bearing and the shoulder on the shaft (the bushing may ride against the bearing inner race) that the bushing rides against. I think you can buy the bushing and the retainer sleeve at an IH dealer. Or you can find a salvage place and get them. Looking at my parts info ( a little hard to make out) I think the bushing is part number 43630D and the retainer is 48087DB. The parts info calls these spacers. The one the seal runs on is 43630D and the other one is the one that goes over the splines when you take off the belt pulley.

Thanks. Right now it has a 2 inch rubber plumbing coupler clamped on to the outer housing with a hose clamp. The outer end is plugged with a pvc cap and a hose clamp. It may run out, but it will run back in. This seems to have stopped it for now and the rotating shaft is not exposed. A 2 inch pvc pipe will fit over the housing as well. It clears the 3 pt lift arm by more than an inch.

We plan on using this as the sprayer tractor and with getting on and off the tractor, the less rotating exposed parts the better.

I used the C yesterday for the first time. The rubber seat pivot bushing are gone and that adds to the excitement with rocking side to side. The tractor ran and drove great. The bigger tires did alot to the ride when driving in rough areas.

Thanks foe replys

Don, with all due respect, there should be NO rotating parts when you dismount the tractor.

In other words, if you are not turning off the PTO before leaving the seat... You should not be leaving the seat.

There is a cast cover that goes on in place of the belt pulley drive if you still want to remove it. You should be able to find it at most any tractor salvage yard that specializes in IH tractors.
