OT - Disposing of used oils/fluids

Question for all the guys that have rebuilt numerous tractors out there. What do you do with all of the old fluids that you drain out these old machines?

Engine oil is fairly easy to recycle at the auto parts store, but I got yelled at the last time I brought some in oil with some anti-freeze mixed in from a blown head gasket. The manager told me I can't bring any more oil unless it doesn't have ANY water in it.

Where does a guy bring in used rear end oil? Some of the 50+ year old oil I've drained out of the last 2 tractors I worked on resembled snot more so than oil. Is there some place that will take this to recycle?

How about the fuel oil that you run thru to clean out the rear end? Can a guy filter this and reuse it? I try to use it 2 or 3 times in different rear ends, but hat to have gallons of fuel oil laying around that I might not use for years.

How about varnish that used to be gas? I've been burning some of it in bon fires, but it really stinks.

Thanks in advance. Just trying to figure out how to get rid this stuff.

We have a friend who has a transmission shop in town that heats his shop with a waste oil furnace. He takes everything from us and just filters it a few times. His final filter has a water separator cartridge in it. If it's too thick he cuts it with a little fuel oil. Might someone local who has such a furnace.

I take pretty much all I can get. When it is mixed with antifreeze it's not too nice but it usually settles out enough so that i can eventually run it through my waste oil furnace.

Places that take oil in NY don't seem to care about what kind of oil it is as long as it doesn't have water in it.
We mix gear oil, trans fluid and motor oil all together.

set the used oil containers outstde in subfreezeing weather.the water will freeze solid and you can pour the oil safely from the top.throw the now empty container in the trash.

Our county landfill takes old oil. They have a tank that you can dump in, but seems like most of the time that I go there, the tank is full and they have a containment area to set containers. No one has ever asked if it has water or what kind of lubricant it is.

My local mechanic let's me dump into his waste oil barrels. He contracts with a company the provides the barrels and so far never any complaints. I also will use to to burn stumps down below ground level. I have a 55 gallon drum with the bottom cut out that I set over the stump and slowly add the waste oil and let it burn.

I knew a guy who had a waste oil burner, and he would come out to my place once a year and pump out my barrels with his setup. I also used the stuff to burn brush piles after logging.

Find someone with a waste oil furnace. Lots of repair shops have them and burn gallons of the stuff during the cold season. mike

I take all of mine to the local oil recycle place including the heavy transmission oils. If I have staight diesel fuel I take to one of the local gas stations that heats with oil. As for oil with water and even gasoline, in the winter time they get lots of water and gasoline with all the oil brought in, but probably not as much as what is in old tractor drainings. If you have the right container with a bottom drain, you can drain off most of the water and antifreeze. Roger

Thanks all.

I will have to see if I can find someone with a waste oil burner in my area. Right now I think I have 2 or 3 old milk cans full of engine oil and I think I have about 20 gallons or so of rear end oil in gas cans.
