I followed your advise and grounded the field post of the gen. The ammeter jumped to about 9 amps. Soooo I guess this brand new VR from Stieners is bad, right? I have the gen post on the bottom of the VR wired to the A post on the gen. The field post on the gen is wired to the field post on the VR and the BAT post on the VR is wired to the Ammeter post (Right side as viewed from the back of the guage). As told on this forum, since I am now using a VR and not a cut out, I went to a three position light switch which means the L post on the VR is no longer needed, therefore it is not wired to anything. Does all this sound correct to you? If so, I am fixin to find out if Stiener's stands behind what they sell. Thanks

You are correct. the VR is not latching . If it has a three brush gen. Be sure the third brush is as close to the fixed brush as possible. If it is not, it might not put out enough voltage to latch a good VR. If the charge stayed charging when you took off the field to ground jumper, I would suspect that.
The VRs are made for a 2 brush gen, and might be OK. Jim..

Okay, just started again after it sat for about 2 hours. Started it up and to my suprise it was showing a 6amp charge. I turned the lights on with the engine at 3/4 and got a 9amp discharge. I turned the lights off and the amp meter went to 0 and no longer showed a charge. Do VR work intermittantly? Is this because as you said the 3rd brush on the gen needs to be moved? Let me konw and I'll put this to rest. Thanks so much for your direction and input!!!!

I suppose if you have a new regulator you will want to return it to Steiners, but I suspect there is something, either on the regulator points or between them, that is keeping them from establishing contact. Inside the regulator case, the regulator coil is on the right side. These points are closed when the tractor is off and they ground the field on startup. If there is something (film on points, small particle of debris, etc., preventing these points from establishing contact with each other, your field will not ground on startup and your generator will not produce current. Therefore, it may be as simple as running a small strip of clean paper between the points to strip off the coating or debris.

So you now had it charging. That's progress but there still is something weird going on with that discharge with lights on. I'm not sure what the answer is since I believe your regulator should be compensating for the additional current draw by the lights so your ammeter should be relecting a slight charge, even with the lights on. There should be no discharge with the lights on if your engine is at half or slightly above half throttle.

If every time it is not charging, it starts when it is jumped field to ground, it is a regulator issue. Jim
