John deere 2010 4 post regulater Can I replace it with a 3 post regulater and hook up wires from "L" term on old regulator to "BATT" term on 3 post regulater. Are wires on "L" term just going to lights? Have an extra 3 post reg. and don't want to buy a new one. Have already proved old one bad by your testing procedure. Thanks for your expertise.

YES you can replace a 4 terminal (BAT FLD ARM LOAD) with a 3 terminal (BAT ARM FLD) provided its for a Class A charging system and suits your ground (POs or Neg).

The (L)oad was to supply hot battery voltage to loads like lights and ignition but with no L terminal they can be fed instead EITHER from the BAT terminal on the VR or the Load (NOT battery/starter) side of the ammeter. Usually they (with only a 3 terminal VR) are fed off the ammeter instead of BAT on the VR but thats near the same point electrically so it will work off the VR
