Fan Belt adjust on C

Hey Guys, what's the secret or trick to adjust the fan belt on my C? Has anyone got a way to do this easy? Do you have to grind down a wrench to get on the nut to loosen it because there is hardly any room to get on the nut. Or is there a washer or spacer missing on mine that don't let it stick out enough. I assume the nut on the end is captive and you have to turn the one on the front of the bracket it slides in? Help I need to tighten mine. Thanks....Fred

Sounds like you are on the right track, they can be difficult and rear nut may want to turn also, not supposed to but corners may have rounded off previously. There should be a rather thick washer behind the hex on front to give you enough room for a wrench or start grinding one down.

Again, you're on the right track. The slot on the rear side of the bracket holds that nut captive, until it gets loose enough to wobble, then you'll have to snake a wrench onto it. The loosening is done with the hex on the spindle. Not sure what the difference might be but I've run into them both ways, with enough gap to get a standard wrench onto the hex, and others that need a tappet wrench to get in there. I do know the one I have that needs the tappet wrench is a 13/16". Can't remember if the others, that take a regular wrench, are 3/4 or 7/8, but I do know they're 1/16 off the other one. Whether you wind up buyin' a wrench or grindin' one down, it'd be a good idea to slip a caliper down in there to measure up for the right size.

Thanks for the responses. What does a tappet wrench look like and where can you get them? Do they look like the flat wrench you get with a radial arm saw to change the blades?...Fred

A Tappet wrench looks like a conventional doub'e-ended open-end wrench, just a very much thinner profile. There are some that are cranked around a few more degrees than is customary, and there are various wrenches made of flat steel (like blade anc collet wrenches) that might work. As far as finding a tappet wrench, first make sure of the size you need. They can be gotten off the high-end tool trucks, or Craftsmans singly or in sets thru catalog or a well-stocked store. My 13/16" I found at McMaster-Carr -- price was decent as I lived just a few miles away so could save the shipping -- and it turned out to be a Proto.
