W-4 Starter

If it is mounted to the rear of the engine (toward operator) yes. (I think it does) If it is from, or going onto a machine with a front mounted starter, it will turn backwards. Series wound Starter motors are wired to turn only one direction (polarity does not matter) the drive will not work either, as it is an inertia engagement system. Jim

Yes, either one will fit, but if the starter is from an M, you may need to rotate the nose and end cap in order to get the battery cable stud oriented properly.

I took one off of one of my Ms and put it on an I-4. (Basically same as a W-4) It was the exact same as the one on my M, no reclocking needed and is still on there after several years. (I had the other reworked and put it back on the M.)

The H and M starters are the same with the exception of the early H starters did not have the center bearing plate on the armature. I always added the bearing plate when ever I rebuilt an early one. I doubt that there are many DelcoRemy units left that still do not have the third bearing. A few after market front housings do not have the recess machined in them to except the bearing plate.
