Ok, so I am still having issues with starter. I bought another one, used at that, which maybe the problem also, but came from running tractor. When I hook up the batterty up, it starts sparking, but no reaction from the starter. I replaced my starter switch with a new one. I am so lost.

The starters may be jambing in the ring gear. If the starter will run out of the tractor,(old it down well, it will be violent!!) it should be good to go. The clutch style pinion drive will make a great difference in its reliability. Jim

I tried that, it spins very slowly, fully charged battery, but what I dont get, is when I make my last connection, which was on the battery, it sparks as I touch it, and I am not even hitting the button, just trying to put the battery clamp on the battery.

Spinning slowly is not good. The bushings should be checked, Armature dragging on the field poles. If you use the starter switch with the ign. off, it should not spark until the button is pushed. Jim

Justin, do you have an auto electric place near you? I take my starters, alternators, and gennys in and have them bench tested by them before I start ripping hair out of my head. It does not cost much to have a complete rebuild done if necessary but, if nothing else, you can get an answer as to what is wrong. I have a SAV starter in shop right now. There are some things a pro can do faster and better than you can.

I do, but they dont do a very good job, cause I took it to them already and they said it needed a little attention, but when I got it back, nothing changed. Still doesnt work.

have you checked for a chaffed spot on battery cable contacting frame or body of tractor? if it sparks, then current is flowing from some sorce. check any wire leading from hot terminal to a sorce to ground. d.coleman

is this the same starter the has worked satisfactrally in past? is there any chance the bendix isnt properly aligned or to tight on ring gear of flywheel? just a thought. good luck, d.coleman

The battery cables are brand new, and no, the starter has not worked since rebuild, it would turn the motor over 1 or 2 times then stop, and the 1 or 2 times was so slow. I think I am gonna buy a new starter.

"when I make my last connection, which was on the battery, it sparks as I touch it"

Sure sounds like you have a short somewhere. A multimeter will help track that down. What happens when you disconnect both battery cables from the tractor and wire directly to the starter? And make sure the ground connection is to shiny metal.

new idea!!!
There are bad starter buttons out there!!
I think it has either a short to ground at the big button, or is internally heating from a bad set of contacts. Put the starter in the tractor, with the switch disconnected. TOuch the hot battery cable directly to the starter stud. (with ground attached as normal) If it then gives trouble, starter time it is. Jim

If your sparking when you touch the battery thats your issue.you shouldn"t be drawing power. You do have neg 2 Positive and Positive 2 Neg...right???

My auto-electric guy is VERY good. A word of warning on the new starters. I am sure you know where virtually everything is manufactured these days and the quality issues that come with it. I would go with a quality rebuild before I dumped it and went to a new one. If Jim is right in his post and the switch on the starter is bad then your rebuild was lacking. They should have replaced the switch...but then again we know where the new switches come from so that might not be entirely their fault. Find a new shop and get it over with.

Do you have the original style starter with the heavy switch on the steering post or newer style with the switch on the starter & a pull rod is used to activate?
If the later, check the screws that hold the switch to the starter because if they are too long they will penetrate the field coils inside the starter and sparks will fly when attempting to start the engine. BTDT!!

If it's sparking, you have a dead short somewhere, and that is causing the starter to turn slowly. It will also drain the battery, and if bad enough could cause the battery to explode.

Check the stud insulator bushings where your battery cable connects to the starter if this is shorting out it will cause the same problems, could have a shorted feild in armature also.

If all else fails take it apart if it is shorting out you will find evidence of the arching somewhere inside the starter.

Good Luck.

Nothing to do with the starter, maybe, but as far as the battery goes, always attach the ground cable last. If it sparks when attaching the ground, then there is a problem, as you already know.

Update, just bought a new starter. I dont know how I can have a short anywhere else but the starter, as I have new cables, starter switch and new battery. I fixed the sparking issue, not sure how, but it wont spark any more. The starter still spun slowly, so it had to be it.

Charge the battery fully. Hook it up, If it still spins slowly, Put 12 volts to it with the ignition off, and use the 12v jumper cable Positive to ground, and negative to the starter terminal, not the starter switch. It should spark a hot spark, but it should spin like a champ Be careful to have it in neutral. !2v will not cause issues with the starter at all. Jim

Ok, just got the new starter (brand new) and when I put it in, the starter motor is spinning, but not spinning the motor. Is this a sign of a weak battery, where it will not spin fast enough to throw out the bendix. I think I am using the right vocabulary.

well i figured it out, it is the battery, it is charging, and turns over like it is suppose too, so all i have to get passed is my carb issue.
