Surprised at how easy this was. It appears the shaft collars are made a few thousandths undersized. As I turned the Allen head screws, I could feel the collar firmly griping the IPTO shaft.

I don't think it will move. This sure beats welding for convenience and future convertability.

Does anyone else think that the previous owner had problems? Shouldn't the dogs be more square? There was silicone gasket maker on the cover joint.
 
Looks like a good solution for your situation. I would guess if there was a previous problem the lever mechanism would show a lot of wear from trying to hold it engaged.
 
The fit-up of the two pieces is too good to be wear. You'd see gaps at the corners and tips of the cogs if they had been grinding against one another. The tapered cog design simply makes engagement (a little) easier.
