place your bets..., part 2

I posted yesterday about my new project, a 1940's Farmall A. Anyway, I pulled the head this afternoon. Visually, I don't see anything wrong w/ the block or the head. What I did find was a white silicone on both sides of the head gasket??? It looks like window caulk. Also, all of the head nuts were fairly clean (usually, the ones outside of the valve cover are encased in old grease)...and, non of the bolts were torqued (I broke them all free w/ little effort w/ an open end)...ever the optimist, I have ordered the new top end gasket kit....I'm hoping for the best..."place your bets"..... the new gasket kit should be here mid-week...

...oh, when I pulled the head there was evidence of green antifreze in all cylinders....but, this may have come from the water-jakets when I pulled the head???

Sounds to me like some bozo tried to put the head back on without a gasket, thinking silicone would do.

Under those circumstances, I wouldn't worry about a little antifreeze slopping around.

Good luck!

I had one of those! on a 10-20 I picked up Found head gasket with RTV all over it! Had a crack in the head and I think the guy thought it was the gasket and kept torquing it till he stripped the studs. oldiron29

It's worth the try. All you're out is a headgasket and some time. But don't get your hopes up too high. You could have a cracked or warped head or warped block from getting hot.

But some people have all the luck. A guy I used to work with bought a locked up Super A. He found a piece of gravel (rock) lodged in the crankshaft pulley. He got it out and had a perfect running tractor.
