Carb upgrade?

I have an IH 454. The Marvel carb on this tractor has been a source
of near constant problems. I've had it rebuilt three times in the last
two years but it still gives trouble. Is there any kind of an upgrade
from the stock carb?

The most common I guess would be flooding and running rich.
It ran and started great for a couple of months, and then suddenly one day while mowing it started coughing black smoke and acting like it wants to die. Ever since then it has been hard to start and run poorly.

I will guess that a speck of rust or other crud has found its way to the needle valve and is preventing it from closing fully. You need to make sure that the fuel inlet fitting on the carb still has the fine mesh, internal screen in place, and that your sediment bowl also has the filtering screen in place.

You should be able to take the carb apart, remove the needle valve, clean it good, and put it right back in.

Fuel sediment is a main reason for carburetor problems. I would install in the gas line to the carb a secondary fuel filter and try this out before I would invest in another carburetor.

Is there an accelerator pump in this carb? If it does there's a chance it's sucking gas past the pump plunger. I'm not an expert on this by any means, but I did have a problem like this on my 105 gas combine with a 4020 engine. Deere had an accelerator pump in the Marvel Schebler carb on some of the new generation models, and when the brass vacuum piston wore a little in the bore gas would start sucking around the piston and into the intake manifold. I plugged the vacuum hole in the top of the carb and that stopped the rich idling and helped the fuel economy. The downside was I had to open the throttle slowly or it'd cough and spit. I was told the Oliver 1850 gas had the same carb and the same problem too. Just an off-the-cuff suggestion. Jim
