Hi Guy's Ive got a JD A of 47,
Its ok, Im wanting to get it running,
But it's wierd?
I keep going back to farmall and IHC stuff
like an M or 350,
Ive seen johnny Poppers plowing they are ok, but then a farmall M is to me a WAYYY BETTER TRACTOR,
I got on here last week, and I was asking if I let the A go would i be better off with an M in the long run?
I got all this flak about nooooo dont let the A go, farmalls are no good compared to an A JD, and you could get 2 M's for the price of an A JD,
this A looks funny to me and everytime i go out to mess with it ?
I cant get into it much,
An M makes a lot more sense to me than this A does,
maybe i got the A cause of so called scizms on JD around here,
I fit an M better and the gear lever is right where you want it, on front of you with a knob not a stick and hand clutch,
I know Im not nut's for realizing this but I dont like to talk to JD people about this alot think im crazy for liking an M and not an A,

Im a JD person at heart. Raised on a JD 70 gas and a model B. My gradpa had a Farmall H . If I was going to work it in the field Id choose the Farmall.
I currently own a JD 60 , Farmall Super M and a Case SC. Whatever you like , Just do it.Dont listen to anyone else unless theyre paying the bill..LOL
Just my 2cents, Ray

i grew up with the i-h tractors, and am familiar with em. always wanted a jd b (styled) and a jd model r diesel with a pony start, i dunno just something about em. an allis g would look real good in my shed too. and maybe an ollie super 99 with the gm diesel. course a j.i case steamer would also be handy. jd la too. 1855 oliver with a cab too. sooo many tractors....sooo little time!!!!!

When I was younger I was die hard Farmall..and hated JDs with a passion..but I was also a diehard Chevy guy and now own a Mustang..so you get what I'm saying. Both are probably good tractors. I've never owned a JD or even driven one for that matter, but I'd love to have an old JD B or something, but I'm happy with my H's and M's that I have..with that said I also am not into A's or B's at all..they just don't do it for me.

I think it's all a matter of opinion. The first two tractors I ever had were a M and JD B. Got them both still today. I grew up on a farm where you make do with what you got and what you can afford. So we have both. Although my great-grandpa swore up down when farmall quite making the M they quite making a tractor.

Keep the JD A and buy yourself an M. Be bi-tractoral. Buy yourself an Ollie and and AC and be quad-tractoral. It's all good.

The M series is a great, milestone, tractor. It and the H fed the USA throughout WW-II and beyond.
Life is short; [b:d4483d5c3c]Get what your heart wants[/b:d4483d5c3c]. I adore my SH and SM, and my cousin loves his JD 730. We both respect (although don't understand) each other's loves.

I like running my JD's, but find that when I have work to do, the Farmalls - M's and H's - are more user friendly ie, clutching and shifting. M seems to have more power that the A.

Hi Bert,
Mann you got that right,
i fit an M alot better than this A ive got, the pedal's on this a are soo small,
I get on this A and it feels like theres nothing to hold onto,
Totslly narrow,
I get on an M and it's like im at home,
i mean when I got it a year ago i thought Id like it,
but now when i climb on it,
It feel's wierd,
It's a slant dash model,
Im not complaining,
but you know what you like,
Ive driven M's before,
they are pretty cool,
tall yes,
maybe a platform type tractor would be better for me?
I like the later D's,
and W-9's too,
driven 9s before too,
never driven a late D, but sat on them and I like them,
maybe I can get used to this A?
tried a B once?
couldnt get used to the brake's, and hand clutch,
went a little bit on It,
but kept trying to remember to tap the brake's and or pull the clutch back to slow it down,
sheesh,,,,,,, I mean i felt like i was outta control,
Im thinking about this driving this A, & it feel's wierd,
totslly unnatural!!!!!!!!
i wonder if anyone else felt like this the first time they tried a johnny popper?
Im not putting it down, but the more i think about it,and even going out to it at night and sitting on it?
thinking about how to drive it.
im thinking ?????
What did i do buying this thing and NEVER DROVE ONE EXCEPT THAT B,
like I had to relearn how to drive a AND FEELING
i have to relearn how to drive a tractor,

We have a "48 A (one of a few Deeres) and a "54 Super M (one of a few IHs.) I would be hard pressed to pick a favorite of the two. I guess it would be specific to what I was doing: Plowing I much prefer the A as that seat is worlds more comfy for watchin where ya been. Backin" anything the M gets it hands down as the reverse speed isn"t wayyyyyyyy too fast and the foot clutch wins there. Same with loader work but that is a lil unfair as the SM has live hydraulics and the A doesnt.
Pulling is a toss up as the A is about the only Deere we have that is competitive in a truly stock configuration.)
As far as mechanicals, the SM has the discs, so the Deere brakes win out. Changin a muffler or a radiator certainly goes to the IH, but when it"s time for clutch work the IH is bummin"!
Around here the Hs and Ms bring about the same money as As and Bs when the money actually changes hands (people always figure they have a gold mine when they are sellin" Green so it takes a while of no interest for them to get real!)
I do know that as a rule IH folks are alot less critical and not as snobbish or hoity toity! I enjoy IH shows more for this reason, and because there are more products to see: trucks, Scouts...
Overall if pressed to pick two keepers out of our whole fleet which includes several colors and models, it would be neither the A or the M;
I would opt for the Super C and the JD 70.
But I sure would miss that Super H, and the Ns, and the B...oh yeah the 420 and the D10...haha

Ms never changed much through the years, but JD As did. M always had a 5 speed and the early A had a 4 , later a 6 speed. So when comparing the two, you need to consider the age of the A. Late As were a lot more tractor than the early ones. By the time the M went "Super", JD went to the 60, and the 50/60/70 series was a whole new deal... much better tractor with the live pto and hydraulics. JD hydraulics from '48 on were much better IMO.
'47 was kind of a transition year for JD... some had hydraulics and some didn't. They did have the 6 speed, but I believe '41 to '47 was still the 2 lever 3x2 shift. Lots better when they went to the one lever in '48.
Dad had a '40 A with a Behlen 5/6th gears, then a 60 in '53. His brother that he farmed with had a '50 or '51 A, so I have run them all. I have also worked for neighbors and relatives with Hs and Ms and Dad had an H in later years... I would take the late A or 60 over the H or M for most things.
