Cub oil leak

We have a 48 cub that is leaking oil out of the inspection plate under the bell housing pretty badly. My manual shows the oil pump in that area as well as the rear main seal. I am wondering if the pump is leaking, it seems too bad of a leak for the seal. Would the rear seal keep leaking after the engine was shut off? It leaves quite a puddle in the garage when parked.I haven't torn it apart yet, I was hoping to get through mowing season before splitting the tractor but now I don't think it will hold out that long. Do any of you guys have a good guess what I might find in there?

Thanks a lot,
Mike

You will need to split the Cub to rep;ace the rear seal. Pump is inside the pan. Are you sure there isnt a hole in the pan?

Mike, I have the same issue with mine, and it is the rear main seal (at least on my cub). I actually fill the oil and check the gas. The oil pools a bit in the bell housing and after you shut it off it continues to seep out.

Yes, you have to split the tractor to repair.

oil pump is bolted to rear of camshaft behind flywheel. if gasket is leaking dont make one any thicker than original. the extra clearance will cause oil to go between pump gears and housing, causing a loss in oil pressure. the cub i just o/h was seeping at pump gasket (bolts slightly loose) so i drilled the bolt heads and safetied them with wire. good luck, d.coleman

You can tell the difference between trans oil and crankcase oil by its smell and viscosity. Based on what was said it tends to indicate the problem is from the front rather than the rear of the Cub. Whether it is the crank seal or pump gasket can only be determined after a split.

I am heading out today (hopefully) to split mine for a similar problem. If you are going to split the tractor and replace the main seal you need to go over to the cub website and scroll down thru the old posts looking for this subject. There is an issue with replacement seals and I am told the problem will reoccur without some special attention to the seal retainer. Look into it.

Not the oil pump leaking. If it were it would lose it's prime.

Rear main engine seal or transmission front seal. Both oil leaks show up at the same location.

If you haven't done so, drain the transmission/differential and refill. Transmission has a tendency to accumulate water bringing the oil level up to and on the seal.
