hydralic lift for plow

I have an old plow, its not ih but it is a wheel lift. I am wondering if you could change it to hydralic lift by puting a one way cylinder on it and use with my M? I only have single way on the M and really dont want to change if just for a plow. Thanks Paul

Yes you can. In fact IH offered a kit to convert rope trip plows to hydraulic lift back in the day. Hydraulics lift it, the plow's weight should drop it back down. If the plow is light, you may need to put some weight on it to get the plow to drop quickly using a single acting cylinder.

I have run both, the hydraulic is much nicer to operate.

When the plow hits something hard, the plow unhooks and the hydraulic lines disconnect. No oil is lost, all you do is back up to the plow, hook back up to it and lift it out of the ground.

I don't what that other guy is talking about. I suspect that he does not either.

Don't go with hyd. lift unless you have trip bottoms. When break a ways unhook they're messy and if you don't get the tips clean you have a greater chance of getting dirt in the hyd. system. If you are plowing for fun and have a good working ground lift- Keep it. Thanks DTK

Would not be hard to do but they did use two amall cycls to lift the 3-14. Just make sure your hy coupler is a breakaway.

I have plowed with both trip plows and hydraulic with break-away couplers... I'll take the hydraulic any day. And we had a few rocks. Just be sure you get the hose ends clean before plugging them back in.
Ever plow with one of the JD plows with the linkage that trips the clutch on the old 2 bangers? Now that's a thrill!!

It can't be any less pleasant than having your arm jerked out of its socket when you hit a rock a few feet from the end of the field with a trip lift plow...

You know how you sit kind of sideways so you can look forward and backward.... well, that puts your left knee pretty much in line with the clutch handle. After one time, you figure out a position so you aren't sitting like that. Dad and my uncle both got badly bruised knees from them. Personally, I was too young to plow with that tractor, but later I did a lot with another 60 and first an Oliver "rooster comb" and then an IH hydraulic plow which I bought when I (in 1960 as a Sr. in HS) rented some farm ground from the local banker.
