What to expect with Farmall H

Hey guys,

I started working on an H a couple of years ago and it scared me off ... first time restoration ... could handle the pressure; it was easier to just walk away. It's at that stage now that I'm not sure where all the pieces I've got off of it go. First, I need reasurrance that I can do this. Then tell me what I can expect to find if and when I remove those housings on the inside of each axel (it's got a grease fitting. I'd like to replace the seals inside but I'm kinda worried about what's in there. There looks to be a gasket as well? Also, what about the pto housing? Not the shaft seal itself ... but the housing that bolts to the tractor - that seems to leak a bit - there looks to be a gasket in there? Can I purchase all these gaskets ... or do I need to cut them from gasket material?

This is just the first of MANY questions. My wife has finally gotten upset that the H is in the barn in pices - I've got to get back to work on it. My strategy is to fix all the leaks I can find ... keep removing parts ... paint .. and then start to put the thing back together. Does that sound right?

Yes you can fix it and get all the parts you need for it there out there. I had my S/C Framall apart for several years. I don t know how much you have torn apart but I would suggest that you just do one job at a time. There s alot of great people here always willing to help.

I don't see why you can't do it. Don't know what your level of knowledge is about tools and such but there is nothing on that tractor that cannot be learned from reading (and re-reading) the service manual and then posting your questions here. Very good people here who will answer your questions for you. A few who will give you a little bit of a hard time. Just like any community. Do your homework, ask your questions, read the answers, ask for clarification, get her done. Guys here taught me everything I know about working on tractors.

Yea you can do it , And with the help of the guys that have BTDT and some picture they can probably tell ya what bolt goes where . A digital camera a printer and being able to post pictures on here it will be like having one of us helping you .

Thanks to all who responded with encouragement. Looks like I'll be back working on the H tomorrow. What about that axel housing and the PTO housing I asked about?

That would be under the "doing your homework" part. If you are going to tear into something new you should be reading that section in your manual and looking at the exploded diagrams. If you don't have a manual set, order one, and in the meantime you can get SOME help from the parts search section of the Case/IH website. There are printable diagrams there. Once you have looked at the pictures and read the procedures someone here who has done it before can give clarification if you need it. TV has some good advice in his post...get the camera out.

Well I have had my Super H torn apart for at least 4, maybe 5 years. So guess I can join you.
I tinker on it now an then. It's in about a thousand pieces. I grew up with them, took quite a few pics., and I know I can do it, just need the time. A little extra $$ wouldn't hurt either.
