Running on Only 3 Cylinders

I took my 1949 Farmall MD on its bi-monthly drive today. About 10 minutes into the drive, it shuttered and then made a noise that made me think something was falling apart. I stopped, and the engine started running on only three cylinders and smoking badly. I made it back home and put it back in the shed.

The injector pump is full of oil. I really do not know where to look for the problem. It will start on gas also, but it still only runs on three cylinders. Please help.

Thank You!

You could have 2 things that have gone bad... First would be that you have an injector out and it has fouled out the spark plug, reason why your not running on gas on the cylinder on the gas side to. Second issue I would look at is a possible valve issue, ie bent or broken push rod or valve stem. You have to pull off the intake and steering to remove the valve cover but its not to bad. Just my thoughts.

If it only runs on three cyls on gas also, it is time to start taking valve covers etc off and taking a look. Might be as simple as broken rocker or push rod. If it hits on all four on gas, I would take off the fuel injection lines at the injectors and start it up, if you dropped a nozzle valve , compression will shoot out that nozzle.

Do a compression check on the gas side. It will have ~80psi or so. if one is Zero, it will require taking it apart at the valve cover on down till the issue is resolved. I like the other answers, but this test keeps you from diving into an empty pool, Jim
