460D serial number

I just purchased a 1959 460D and the serial number is followed by a triangle that looks like it was stamped using a screw driver or chisel.
Can anyone verify this means tractor drive train was updated in te field at some point?

According to what I have read, they beefed up the rear end or axles, but I'm not certain.

Thank you for the response, IH GUY

This is what I hve found out so far.

60 Series Recall and Later Production
At the Hinsdale, Illinois Testing Farm in July 1958, IH entertained over 12,000 dealers from over 25 countries. IH showed off their new 60 series of tractors: including the first of their kind, large six-cylinder 460 and 560 models. But the excitement caused by the new introduction was short-lived. In June of that year, IH recalled the 460, 560, and 660 tractors after reports of mechanical breakdown in the field. IH, who wanted to be the first big-power tractor manufacturer, had inexplicably failed to substantially enlarge and re-engineer critical drive components on the new six-cylinder tractors. The tractors' final drives, which were essentially made up of unaltered model "M" components, failed rapidly under the stress of the more powerful 60 series tractor engines.

They put larger/stronger bearings in the rear. The rear that the 460 had was a good but was originally designed to handle the Farmall H (28hp), as years went buy they beefed up the rearends from the super h (34hp), to 300/350 (37hp). However the 6 cylinder high rpm engine the 460 (45 hp) got just took a toll on them. The 560 had the same issue.

Well, here is what I put in ten 460 and 560 tractors on that improvement field change. New 25 degree angle tooth profile bull gears and bull pinions. New differential case, spider gears and cross, tapered roller bearings on differential and new bull pinion housing to a ccomodate Larger ball bearings on bull pinion shafts. I can't remember for sure if the inner axle bearing was changed to a Bower flat roller at that time or not, but a bearing package was released a couple of years later with again improved bearings. That included different tapered roller bearings for differential, bower roller bearing on pinion shaft and 460 went to bower roller on bull pinion shaft. Also the outside rear axle ball bearing was changed ( to a looser ball fit to allow for deflection of axle and play in axle from the inside roller bearing. Also, a tapered shim on differential to compensate for deflection in differential case under heavy loads. New cap on shift lever with o-ring and breather hole added to shift lever tower as it was previously to breathe through the shift lever cap under spring .

Hit wrong key again, wasn't done. The lube tube to differential was kind of a running change, we drilled holes in bull pinion retaining housings to direct return oil from hyd pump directly on bull pinion bearings, also had hole to lube pinion bearing. These changes made a tremendous difference in the 560's. The 460's still liked to eat up bull gears and bull pinions if used for heavier tillage. Lot of 460's were sold originally to replace a super m or 400 as HP was about the same , but of course the rest wasn't. Also put that 560 package in a 450 for a customer. It was not a high urgency recall as some would like to make one think as we kind of strung it out to fit our shop schedule.

Thanks for the reply and info. I feel confident that the triangle symbol behind the serial number means that my tractor got the update. I just bought her and one of these days when shes' finished, i'll take her out in public and maybe go dancin with her at the track!
