What assures a good ground???

1948 Cub; everything electrical is new or rebuilt. Everything is wired properly. Still doesn't charge. Have been told it could be a ground problem. What assures a good ground for the gen and voltage reg. Is it just wiring or is it the metal contact between the gen and mounting bracket? Is it metatl to metal contact between the gen and vr? Thanks in advance.

Yes.

...and I'm not being a smart aleck about it... Everything you said is crucial for a good ground. Everything must be touching shiny metal to shiny metal.

A good ground is metal to metal contact. However the flow of electrons is not visible and a "good ground" can only be verified with a voltmeter. A good ground is one where there is a specified voltage drop that is proportinal to the current flow through the connector.

run some temporary ground wires from the genny chassis and the v-regulator chassis directly to the battery ground and see if that helps. other wise........here is a link to the super secret charging system diagnosis chart courtesy of our very own young, handsome and talented John T !!!!!
follow his test proceedures from start to finish, dont skip ANY steps.

Maybe you just need to polarize the generator. It amounts to momentarily connecting bat. on battery or other battery location to gen on generator. This sets up the magnetic field so the generator can charge. There is a write up under frequently asked questions that will give you more details. This is a simple but necessary procedure. On a cub this assumes you have the Battery+ as ground and the negative connected to the load. If you are wired the other way then change it so that when you are looking at schematics or reading about cubs you will be set up as original. The 48 cub was positive ground. Your question about what is a good ground. I agree with the other answers but it is as simple as a good ground looks like the battery ground to the system. I.e. there is no resistance between the connected ground and the battery terminal that is grounded.

Polariezed the gen first thing after replacing all electrical components. Still doesn't charge. I'm going to check all metal to metal surfaces this weekend. It's sitll 6v with +ground.
