My 53 super H grill is different then I've seen. the 2 squares in the grill usually have a hole in them. In my grill the squares are solid. I'm wondering if It's a transition grill between H and super H. Ever see one???

i guess you could call it a transition grill between early stage two super h"s and late stage two super h"s. i would call yours the hardest style to find.

A bunch of Super H"s between serial numbers 15994 and 16921 have the stage two grill with the holes not punched out like you describe. I agree that this is the hardest variation of H grill to find.
I have Super H 18892, it has a stage 2 bolster but a stage 1 grill, it appears that the grill is original to the tractor but may have been changed - who knows what may have been changed in 55 years. Hope this helps answer your question. Would like to know the serial number of your tractor if possible. I"m compiling a registry of Super H"s and occasionally it helps in answering a question like this.

I have Super H 18892, it has a stage 2 bolster but a stage 1 grill, it appears that the grill is original to the tractor but may have been changed - who knows what may have been changed in 55 years. The J indicates it has a Rockford clutch.
Late Super M had the same transition grill with the unpunched holes. It was probably an inventory management solution to be sure that they had a grill that could be modified when it was ready to go on the upcoming tractors like the SMTA.
You have to remember that grill cartons take up alot of space in the warehouse. They probably did not "nest" them in order to avoid damage to one of the most visible parts of a tractor. The Just-in-Time inventory concept wasn't as refined as it is today. It takes alot of computer capacity and control to implement, particularly with a company like IH with all their parts and products.

This may be a dumb question, but what exactly were the holes used for?
I have a 1953 Stage I Super H S/N SH17556J. It also is a transitional model that my dad bought new in 1954 (I have it now as my most prized tractor). Therefore, I know that everything is original on this tractor as he never changed anything. It has a Stage II bolster and grill (with holes), but the rest of the tractor is Stage I. Apparently, there was not a clean break between the Stage I and II tractors. The tractor was bought in So Dak, but I now have it where I live in Wisconsin. Roger

17659 also has a stage 2 bolster and stage 2 grill ( with the holes punched)

I don't remember if I've replied to your request for Super H s/n. I have s/n 22185 Stage II. This was the 16th to the last tractor made in 1953. I've assumed it was assembled on the last day of production in '53.
My Grandfather bought this new from a dealer no longer in business at North Manchester, IN. The owner's manual shows that he traded in a '47 H for it. My dad told me that he traded a '47 M in at the same time for a SMTA. The SMTA didn't come until spring work was over, so they pulled a 3x14 plow w/ the new Super H that first year, while they waited for the SMTA to be delivered. (wish I had the SMTA, also)
We've had the Super H since new. It was what I learned to drive and plow w/ first (age 6) and was reconditioned and painted 2 years ago. It put out 38 hp on the dyno at the fair last year.
Thanks for doing the registry. Any info of Super H's close to mine is appreciated. I've often wondered if mine might be the highest s/n of the '53s that have survived.
