Farmall 240 Row crop

Went to look at a 240 today. Owner stated that the tranny is a little noisy. Went to look at it any way. Noisy is an understatement. Loud bearing noise in R,1,2,3. 4 goes in gear with a loud clash and maintains that loud clashing noise when clutch is released and tractor won't move.
The question is can this transmission be serviced from under the top plate or does it have to be split. The only reason I'm considering it is I have a donor tractor that supposedly has a good tranny with a blown motor.
 
Why not swap your engine into the good trans! Just keep the good spare parts and scrap out the components that are junk. Many parts can be sold separately. to return some investment. Jim
 
I certainly considered that. Swapping trans is well within my capabilities but alot of work. It looks easy to pull the top plate.
Alot easier than on my H I did. If it can be serviced without having to split that would be the least amount of labor. If it does have to be split I will go all out and replace every thing that needs it anyway. I only have the previous owners word that the trans is good on the parts tractor. I would not be happy to swap trans only to find out the donor has problems also.
So. The question remains. Can this trans be repaired from the top or does it have to be split?
 
I have never taken the trans apart in a 240. I can say they should not be an issue if you are an equipped mechanic. There are bearings, and thrust washers that must be correctly placed. The differential is driven off of the counter shaft, so the pinion engagement and tooth pattern will be affected if every thing is changed. Jim
 
You have to split the tractor to remove and replace parts. Now then maybe the shifting forks and the shifter is the problem and that could be serviced with removing the top.
 
Thanks, I suspected that. I'll pull the top and see what's up. The way it's grinding it can't be good.
