I am looking to replace the drawbar and U shaped drawbar on my Farmall H. The U shaped drawbar was bent in a farm accident and by using the drawbar extension plate clamping the swinging drawbar down instead of a strap on the swinging drawbar. My swinging drawbar is a few inches shorter because the end has been cut off. My question, do the regular Farmall H swinging drawbar and U shaped drawbar stand up to regular farm use? Should I weld 2 swinging drawbars together making it twice as thick ( except on the ends)? Should I use a U shaped drawbar from a farmall M? Thanks.

I use mine to pull a baler with a wagon behind it, and it has been fine so far. I'm sure they can be bent if you run into something hard enough, but they seem pretty strong.

No problem if you use it for the equipment it was designed for. I don't consider the drawbar, U or swinging as a weak point. Overload it and you may have problems.

It was quite common to bend the draw bars on those tractors. Common enough that there were after market reinforcements sold that could be welded on to them.

There are two different length swinging bars depending on which PTO have. It is not uncommon to them reinforced as well.

I have not seen any probs but I dont over load either, the u shaped draw on M is basicly the same, the swing is longer,it will not hurt anything to weld extra piece on swinger just looks,I have replacement parts if that helps, live in ct 203-206-9698

IIRC the U for the M is wider than an H and also is thicker. The MU will fit an H but will mount farther out on the axles. Use to be a lot of farmers put the M shoe on their Hs. because it was heavier built. I would recomend doing the same, shouldn't be to hard to find on in a salvage yard or there are reproductions. If looking for an repro I would recomend conatacting "EasyBob's Tractor Parts"

The M "U" and draw bar are heavier than the H, and will fit (except for the thickness of the pivot, and the thickness of the drawbar might need to be reduced at the point it enters the pivot. (I would go with the M.

If your gonna REALLY load it(probablly too much for an H) then doubling up the drawbars would work. My 650D had the u-shaped drawbar reinforced that way with one u-shaped drawbar welded right on top of another. Got it that way, they used to pull earthmovers with it... But then, around here, I've never seen anything hitched to the swinging drawbar on an old IH- never even seen a swinging drawbar on one..all there ever was on them was the u-shaped drawbar....and I've seen a few of them bent and twisted in iron piles...

I think they look like crap all doubled up and cobbled together. To give you an idea of the strength here is my example. I tractor pull my SMTA in 6600-7500 (fairly large antique classes) It generally finishes in the top half of its classes. My SMTA drawbar was bent from being overloaded with tongue weight. WAY too big of a manure spreader (This was all my father in laws doing before the tractor was mine) I also have an MD and an H. The MD for some reason came with a perfect, unaltered H drawbar. 3/4" vs 1" I swapped out my SMTA drawbar for the thinner H one and tractor pulling and plowing for over three years and it looks just as straight as the day I put it on.
So the moral of the long winded story, unless you are going to do something you REALLY shouldn't the H one will be plenty. I would maybe put an M one on there just for fun and bc I could

The main reason for bent drawbars is abuse, overloading, etc.

The horseshoe can get worn thin in the middle where the swinging drawbar roller spends 95% of its time, after 60-70 years of normal use, too.

I wouldn't worry about reinforcing anything unless you plan on intentionally overloading the drawbar.
