H housing and gear that bolts to engine for distributor

Has anyone ever put a houseing and gear in a H that distributor bolts to without pulling front cover off. Have a good engine with this missing and dont want to tear it down to put it in if I dont have to.Just wondering Thank for any info.

Sure you can. Just put the #1cylinder to tdc on the compression stroke. Put in your distributor drive. Align the rotor in the distributor with the #1 spark plug wire. Start engine and fine tune your timing. Enjoy!

The front gears only need to be timed if you are using a magneto. Even then it is possible to install it from the rear and get it timed correctly.

For a distributor just install the drive and then make the timing adjustment when you install the distributor into the adapter housing.

For a magneto turn the engine to TDC on number 1 compression stroke. Use a mirror to locate the timing mark on the front of the camshaft gear. Mark the tooth (or two teeth if the mark is between teeth) so you can see if from the back side of the gear. Locate the mark on the driven gear and match it to the correct teeth on the camshaft as you install it.
