THIS 504 I H FREEWHEELS DOWN HILLS. OWNER TOLD ME THAT THAT IS THE WAY IT WAS MADE. THAT DOES NOT SEEM RIGHT TO ME. HE SAID IT DOES NOT HAVE A T/A. COULD THEIR BE SOMETHING WRONG WITH IT? IF SO WHAT WOULD IT TAKE TO FIX? WE HAVE A LOT OF HILLS HERE.
THANKS FOR THE HELP.
JIM

It may not have an operational TA, but it has either a shuttle trans (I think), or a TA that is in low TA and has the handle off of it.
If it has a TA with no handle, and was in low range, it would rely on the one way clutch in the TA for driving power, but would free wheel down hill in all gears, including free wheeling backwards in reverse.
With a shuttle trans, it might have the same issue, (I have never operated one of those, so I cannot characterize it.) Jim

(quoted from post at 06:13:49 07/07/10) OWNER TOLD ME THAT THAT IS THE WAY IT WAS MADE.

Excuse me for being blunt, but that is total bull$h!t.

If that were true, IH would've gone under a lot sooner than 1985... They would've closed up in 1965, due to all the wrongful death lawsuits from their freewheeling tractors with inadequate brakes killing small children.

It DOES have a TA.

One of two things is going on:

1. The TA clutch has failed outright.
2. The TA lever & clutch pedal adjustments are so far out of whack that the TA clutch is being held open, essentially causing the tractor to be in TA mode all the time.

#2 eventually leads to #1.

Don't know about a 504, but an early tractor with a TA... 300/350, 400/450 with the TA lever in the rear position darn sure will free wheel.
I took 2 wagon loads of corn to the mill when I was a kid...went over a hill and pulled it back to slow down. Scared the Bee Jezzes out of me. Dad never told me what it would do. I learned that lesson fast.
The 450D I have now does the same thing. Has to do with the sprague in it.

I just bought a 504 Farmall with TA and I had to try this after reading. Yep she will go down hill fast with TA pulled back, lol.

I hate to rain on your paraide, but the early TA"s were built to free wheel in low range. That was one of there weakness"s.
If you do a search on TA"a on this site you will see a lot of post"s that say to NEVER use the TA to go down hill

FYI, using a TA to go down hill/free wheel is a great way to break it.

Yup, Jim... sorry to say these guys are right, early models WILL definately freewheel in low TA. Dad's 1963 model 460 would and I don't know how much later they would... someone recently said the 706 would not because it is hydraulically controlled.

However, they will ONLY free wheel in TA low range. If the owner told you that it was built to freewheel and doesn't have a TA, he is, as was so eloquently stated by mkirsch, full of BS.

Letting the tractor free wheel down hills can cause the lining to be thrown off of the TA clutch disk. Once the lining has left the clutch assembly you will be left with only the low side working and it will always free wheel.

The shuttle transmission is all gear drive, it will not free wheel. It has a TA, maybe no leaver now, but it is in low TA

Sorry, but when I see someone trying to pass off something so clearly dangerous as "normal" it just lights a fire...

Frankly, I would walk away from this deal unless the tractor is CHEAP.

The 504 was available both with and without TA, so it's possible it does not have the TA. If someone is saying it does not have TA and it freewheels down hill, I'd check to see if someone has simply removed the lever and it's in Low all the time.
