another H clutch question

In a previous post i asked for advice as to getting the clutch off the flywheel - thanks - that part is done

Now the issue is the damaged OD race of the pilot bearing is stuck in the flywheel bore. I can't pry it out, and it seems the only way to get at it is to remove the flywheel and press out the race.

So, there are 4 bolts with a washer bridging each two bolts on the flywheel. Is the best way to take off the flywheel to remove the 4 bolts and remove the flywheel through the bottom of the tractor?

Anything I need to watch out for?

I'm not 100% sure on this because I have never tried, but I don't believe you can remove the flywheel in the same way you can replace the clutch through the bottom. You are correct that the 4 bolts will allow you to remove it, but the tractor must be split to actually get the flywheel out.

The opinion of Seth is correct.
You cannot get the FW out of the bottom.
three options seem worth trying:
use an aluminum bar, machine it to the same measured size as the outer race I.D.
cut it at about 4" long. Pack heavy grease into the pilot bearing hole until completely full.
Use the aluminum bar as a hydraulic ram, with a 2# hammer, drive it into the center of the race. (stay straight). This will remove 90% of the stubborn ones.

Use a three finger inside puller with a short slide hammer.

Use a Dremel tool with abrasive cutoff wheels to slice through one side of the race, then move about 3.8" and make another cut. (as deep as you can) then use a sharpened old flat blade screw driver to wedge the segment and snap the race. Jim

I had a sneaking suspicion this was the case and I had already started looking for a slide hammer when I posted this.

Thanks for the advice and I'll let you know when I get it out...

There are two other options for removing the pilot bearing if you have access to a welder.

The first (and in my opinion best method or the two) is to find a nut with an outside diameter close to that of the inside diameter of the old pilot bearing. Install a bolt in the nut and weld the nut to the remains of the pilot bearing, be sure to clip the ground clamp to the bolt. To remove simply wind the bolt in and it'll push out the nut and pilot bearing.

The second (which will only work if you have only the outer race left) is to weld several beads (in short segments) on the bearing surface of the race and allow it to cool. This will shrink the race and allow it to be withdrawn easily. Your best bet is to clip the ground clamp to one of the bolts which holds the pressure plate to the flywheel.

Hope that helped, Sam

another option is a pilot bearing puller. any of the tool trucks, ie snap on-matco ect can get them. here is my snap on puller

may be better to invest in a puller, or borrow one if you can, you will do a lot less damage that way

I tried my gear puller, but couldn't get the ears to grab the race. I ordered a KD tools slide hammer puller kit and hope it'll work. Otherwise I'll try the welding trick below

I may be wrong, but here goes. IIRC removing the flywheel won't do any good. Think the pilot bearing is in the end of the crankshaft, not the flywheel.
I thought i was wrong once several years ago, but that was a mistake.

I used a $15 pilot bearing puller from Harbor Freight.

It had to be modified, by grinding down the tips of the puller hooks so they were thin enough to slip behind the pilot bearing.

With the modified puller it walked right out.

excellent idea! - there's a Harbor Freight store in the next town and
they have one in stock - I'm off to get one and modify it as you
suggest

I picked up the puller a few minutes ago, ground the ends down to
fit and had the race out in no time - thanks!

I know you already bought a pilot bearing puller (which I should do), but if you have any large diameter taps you can use them to remove the pilot bearing. I just took the one out on my Farmall A that way. You find a tap that will thread into the pilot bearing and when the tap bottoms out it pushes the pilot bearing out. It has always worked for me. The problem is a lot of people don't have large taps like 3/4" size. Roger

thanks - another great suggestion - the bearing race is out, but I'll keep it in mind for the next time
