hi there , i have a 1984 international 684 that all of a sudden got stuck in high gear , i can change my 1-2-3-4 gears but cant get it to come out of high into low or reverse . anyone ever have this problem only had the tracor a couple months and not use to some of the problems that might happen any hep would be much appreciated thanks in advance

Repeating what others have said, the issues are often the mechanism on the outside of the trans.
From the lever to the shaft into the trans, components get wear and become harder and harder to operate smoothly. If it were mine I would pull off some sheet metal and look for loose and worn pivot points, and places that would jamb the motion. Higher quality pivots and stronger links have been used to make them better than factory. Jim

Hi, are you telling us that the LO/HI/REV level is stuck in the HI positision OR does the lever go into the LO & REV positions but the transmission remains in HI?
If lever is stuck in HI do as Janicholson suggested. The 684 has two transmissions, Speed 1-2-3-4 located behind clutch housing, Range transmission LO/HI/REV is located under the front of the seat. The shift mechanism goes into the side of the transmission by the hydraulic filter. DO NOT FORCE the shift mechanism or you could twist it or shear it off at the transmission and that would cause the problem where shift lever can be moved to LO or REV and tractor remains in HI.

I am having a very similar problem. i just purchased a 1982 684 tractor. It only has 2000 hours on it. When i tested it out, i could shift into all ranges (hi/lo/rev). When i had a friend pull it off the trailer, he ran it and it shifted in all ranges, ok.
We used it to bale hay yesterday, but only used it in low range.

I went to use it today, and i could not shift into Hi range gear. It will shift into low and reverse fine, just will not lock in and engage the high gear.
I checked the tranny oil, and it was low by 1.5 gallons.

I topped it off, but can not get it to go into High. Any sugeestions would be appreciated.
