Visited with a friend today.
looking in his 3588 I saw the TA was in low. I asked him about it and he said he ran it like that always. Good or bad? I prefer to NEVER pull mine back if I can help it.

The TA on these tractors were not made to run on the low side for great lengths of time, the TA was designed for tough spots or when the engine pulling down. I'm surprised that your friend's TA hasn't failed.

Makes absolutely no difference which position the TA is in. Its improper adjustment and engaging the TA to slow a load that takes them out. I have a 706 I and my dad before me fed cattle with in the winter until recently. It has 7000 some hours with the original TA. We have always ran it in HI third TA because that's the gear that matches the work best. Lots of misinformation about TA's!

I think both the answers you got are right....

What oldts said is true for the older TA's (pre 706)...the ones that freewheel in the low side.

From a 706 on up...it's best to use both sides. There was an ad back then that said "Work all Day in TA".

Like Scott said "keep it adjusted, and don't use it like a brake to slow loads down and you will be fine.

Both sides of the TA wear out eventually, high torque loads on the both sides will wear that side out earlier. That has been documented with many more TA failures on the higher horse power tractors and using them on heavy loads. A 3588 does have enough traction and power to put a lot of strain on them, 706 does not but they still eventually give up, especially the low side sprag from overrunning while using high side. Shift them briskly but like any clutch, going up, don't slam them and don't pull back to brake a coast. Common sense.

I run my TA at times all day long with my 1486 pulling a round hay baler sometimes up and down steep hills. I have the TA in low before going down hills and don't shift it into low going down to slow down the tractor. I usually bale in low 4 TA in high, high 1 TA in low or high 1 TA in high and in rough ground low 4 TA in low. I like having a TA the extra gears in between gears. I was always been told it does not hurt to run it in low all day long. Done it for years with no problems.

If a TA is used it will last. If it is shifted slow it will not. Either the mechanical, or big tractor TA is reliable and only poor maintenance or abuse (slowing a load with the hydraulic TA, or over speeding a mechanical by going faster than the direct speed while coasting in TA, will make it go away.
