IH 574 - 3pt. Stuck In UP position!!

Hey Guys,

I have a 574 with the usual parking brake goop in the hydraulics problem. I"ve had to change the hydraulic filter after every hour of use, to keep the hydraulics functioning.

Recently, when it was time for a filter change, I drained the fluid and flushed the system with some diesel. Tractor worked great after that! I moved 19 rolls of hay and it was still going strong (a record!)- when I went to drop off the 20th roll, I moved the lever to lower the 3pt. - but the 3 pt. wouldn"t go down.

It"s still sitting out there with the 1500 lb. roll up in the air...it"s been there for over 48 hours!

What gives? Any ideas????

HELP!!!

Hi, from Bernard le mecano:

3 pt will not go down:
Maybe the unload valve is stuck. Check with engine running, raise the hitch and at same time pull the remote lever. If the hitch raises, you have dirt in the unload valve. This valve is under the seat and you remove the large plug for access. One trick, loosen the large plug, unload valve, 2 turns and start the engine, the hitch should raise if the valve is stuck. It has a small hole in the valve and just blow the dirt out with air. Replace the O-rings with new ones.
OR
There is a cover on the right side, in front of the rock-shaft. Remove and check if the spool valve moves with the position lever. Make sure the draft lever is down. It has a long spring, with a rod, may be that spring is not unhook.

Jim to the rescue again!

I will check that out on Sunday- I'd say one of those has to be it!!

Since I saw such a big improvement in the up-time of the hydraulics after flushing with diesel....any idea of the best way to get access to just clean the thing out once and for all? I'm thinking just remove the MCV and the pump? Would that give me access to clean out everything that matters?

I'd really like to get the hydraulics straightened out once and for all- I love this tractor, and got a good deal on it and it runs sweet- always stays nice and cool......

Hi Ritchie, thank Bernard as I saved several of his replies because my brother has 4 of this series of CIH tractors.
I don't know the answer for cleaning the hydraulics. Many years ago, I was at IH dealer and mechanic had a 574 with the 3pt housing off and was attempting to clean and flush the hydraulics and transmissions. He may have had the 3pt housing off to replace the parking brake band. The problem is that there 2 different compartments, 1 for speed transmission and another for range trans and rear end plus 3pt reservoir, Cooler, PS and PB plumbing. There is also a suction screen on the input to filter.
Some people have tried putting a cow magnetic(strong magnetics put in stomach of cattle to collect old nails and fence wire) in the filter housing to collect the metallic bits.

Good luck
Jim

Well a BIG thanks to Bernard The Mechanic via way of JimB!

I took the seat off and there was a big plug on the rear of a valve body (horizontal)- tried that and nothing.

There was another plug toward the front on the top cover...tried that and POW! The hay bale hit the ground before I could blink!

Now my only problem is getting the little thingie out of it's bore so I can clean it out....nothing to really grab onto...and no holes or anything...I've been trying with needle-nose vise-grips...and tweezers and tape.....for 2 hours....

If I can get that out, I'll be in business!

Rats!! Cleaned out that unload valve under the seat after finally managing to get it out of it's bore- put everything back together, started the tractor with the PTO lever in the down position....and the hay bale went right back up and stayed there again. Gotta be the linkage, no?

One funny thing- when I tried the lever for the remote, I didn't hear the usual noise that it usually makes......
