H stuck on TDC

I have had my 1942 H for 13 years and for the most part it has run like a top... but yesterday for some reason it got stuck on top dead center and I can not hand crank it over. In the past, I could just crank on past TDC by hand. It was running fine last week. Spun bearing perhaps? Hope not, but I am not sure.

Were you trying to start it at the time? If so, the starter could just be wedged in the flywheel ring gear. Just loosen the two starter bolts and pull it back a bit and reinstall it. Common occurrence when the starter bendix or flywheel ring gear get worn.

Yes, I was trying to start it, and it cranked slightly before it locked up. If it is just the starter, I will be one happy H owner. Thanks for the advice. I locked it in gear and tried to rock it back and forth both that didn't help.

Yeah I took the plugs out and looked in the cylinders, won't be surprised if it is something like that. Thanks 504.

fifth is the only gear to rock it in. it might do it, but looetening the starter will.
A new style clutch drive starter drive will make it all better if it is the issue.
Almost no engine will stick on TDC due to the forces on the crank being near zero at the rod angle of near zero. Jim

ya jim thats what i was wondering how does he know its on tdc? did he check timing marks , or just presumed something. i know: just want to see whos on the ball.

Was it the starter? I'm betting it is. I've had the same thing happen on my 300 and after about three times of freeing the starter up, I bought a new one.

Yes it was the starter. Broke the bolts loose a few turns, moved the starter around a bit, tightened it back up. Cranked right over. Thank so much for your suggestions. Very much appreciated.

Ok....so it was stuck, not sure where at in the stroke. Many times, it would stop somewhere near the top of the stroke and the battery would not turn it over. I would crank it on past the sticking point by hand, and continue on with the battery starting it. But not this time. I was just looking for some ideas about what might have happened and I found the answer here. Thank you guys

Small battery cables are also a suspect.
They should be 0gauge or 00gauge welding grade cables with soldered on terminals. Less than this on a H or M will slow the starter dramatically. Jim

When the starter locks the engine the problem is worn teeth on the drive and possibly also the ring gear. Usually replacing the starter drive is enough to correct the problem. If there are teeth burred over on the ring gear you can make it serviceable but filing off the rough areas. Just make sure the surface that the drive pushes against is smooth.
