Fifth is not really a gear. It is a coupling kinda like a Lovejoy coupling but with many more fingers. The other gears have to travel across the mainshaft about an inch. Fifth only needs half that or less.

Fifth locks the transmission input shaft to the differential pinion gear which is part of the mainshaft. No power goes to the countershaft unless you are using the PTO on non-IPTO tractors.

Next time you are operating your tractor, grind me a pound, please.
 
Cover the radiator & drive around for 10 minutes or so in 5th gear to work the engine a bit and then adjust the valves.

Say, what's with that? It seems to take forever for that clutch to slow down. Usually, I'll turn the tractor off if I'm getting off it to do something. Seems quicker to kick it over with the clutch in & go.
