Restoring a '42 M. There is an 18" crack right under where the bull gear is located. It has been welded. The weld looks old and professionally done. How serious is this and can I ignore and go on with the project?

Will probably last if you don't put a 3-point on it & go lifting heavy equipment. I've seen M's in the shop that had the bull gear wear a groove in the trans. case because of a bad inside bearing on the axle.

A lot of M"s have a patch or weld in that area. If it doesnt leak use it. I used mine even with a seep.

On mine, two of the bolts in the differential broke and became lodged between the bull gear and the trans-axle case when I got stuck. Rocking action to get unstuck was enough to crack the trans-axle case.

This strikes a chord Brownie 450! My 444 was making a noise in the trans that did not sound good, but I was too stressed to deal with it, so used the tractor a while longer for odd jobs. Until the bull gear had chewed through the casing and the oil started leaking out. I cleaned and patched the spot with an epoxy that a person in the know recommended, but it still leaks. In this case it was also the inner axle bearing that had collapsed.

L.L.---the mechanic was welding the groove in the trans. case & had a jack supporting a steel piece on the underside. That one went all the way through, also. He said he'd welded up many trans. cases--he said folks changed the rear end lube too often. I always wondered if IH wasn't a little stingy on the axle bearings.

The tractor be for show, no work, so it sounds like I can go on with the restoration. Thanks guys for the advice...I'll sleep tonight!
