Starter noise

Not an expert on starters, for sure. SAV with a poor 12 volt conversion. Trying to work thru all that is wrong with it to get it running. When you pull the starter rod the starter shrieks and does not engage. Other times it will engage but mostly no. Seems to me I heard they stick so gave it a few taps with a leather mallet, no change. Anyone point me in a direction that might resolve this?

Pull the starter and check the ring gear.
With a bad ring gear the starter will make really bad noises not being able to completely engage the gear. Shriek would be a good word.
If you turn over the engine a little and get the ring gear in a different position try to start the engine and see if it turns over normal without the noise.

I'll do that, thanks. The ring gear looks good to me. Yes there is some fresh wear on a few of the outer edges of teeth as if something was coming against it but not engaging it fully. I have not pulled the starter yet but guess that is the next step. No missing or excessively worn teeth on the ring gear. I marked a starting point and worked the whole circle thru the inspection plate.

When you pull the starter bench test it and see how it sounds and see how the drive is working.
At that time you will also to be able to inspect the teeth on the starter drive.

Better tear the starter down and replace the bushings and maybe newbrushes thats why the converted to 12v rather than fix the starter. Shrieking noise says dry gearing in the starter. Abad Bendix wont squell it just wont enguage good. Ill bet you find no lube in the bearings, bushings.

Well, I don't know what I'll find but I will be getting an education on starters I guess. Not to change the subject, but if you are bringing that rear light bracket for the SAV to RPRU could you send me an e-mail and let me know how to settle up with you? Thanks!

We had starter trouble on our Cat 112 motor grader. Had to get a new gear at the repair shop, & they said that it was probably a 12-volt conversion--it wasn't, but we had been using jumper cables off the pickup. Anyway, he said that 6-volt inertia type starters [A,C,H,M type] used on 12-volt were spinning too fast to get the drive gear engaged with the ring gear--gears clash. Anyway, we always use 6-volts on our A, SC, H's & never have trouble. The SMTA is the exception.
