I just bought a 1948 IH farmall H and as any person wanting to sell a tractor would do the guy said everything works great! well i was born and raised a country boy but i never had a tractor. I am 30 yrs old bought a small place 17 acres and decided it was time..... i traded my big lawn tractor in on it and cash, then i bought a 3 point and installed it,and then a new brushhog ..............................................and wouldnt ya know it....... I got every thing installed checked my hydraulic fluid and it was very low so i was filling the hydrolic fluid and looked under neath of it and it started drizzling out almost as fast as i put it in ..... grrrr ! ....................................................im out of money now..............................................
Do ya have any advice for a guy getting ready to work on the hydraulic pump on my first tractor ?

I thought this wasnt supose to be more work than doing every thing by hand, but now i am behind on my mowing and i have to fix a tractor now ...

Adam, first thing I would do is go back to the person you bought it from. Oil running out as fast as you put it in could be something simple or something really bad. Hard to tell without looking at it. If the hydraulic pump body is cracked, it is junk. If a plug is missing, then it is a simple fix. Also, are you sure that you are putting oil in the right place?

If he stated that everything was working, obviously the hydraulics are not working. If the person you bought it from is worth his salt, then he should work with you to resolve the issue. One would be that he refunds part of your money. Another might be he "loan" you back the mower until you can repair the hyraulics.

Either way, he should make it right. Best case, the hydraulics should be made right on his dime.........

The person you bought it from may or may not help you. However, these pumps are quite simple and easy to fix; the biggest thing is time. You will probably have to take the pump out of the tractor (look in the archives on this site- lots of info) replace the seal on the driving shaft, and the seal where the pump fits into the reservoir. About $20 in parts plus yours (or someone else's labor. Parts are available from your IH dealer or Bates Corp.

Hate to horn in. but this topic is right up my alley so I thought Id put it here. IVE got a 48 H also, AND over 50yrs ago, my dad had one which my brother has now. Im thinking of getting some one way hydraulic cylinders that are old. My question is, When I put them on, how can I tell if the cylinder isnt working, or the pump on the tractor isnt working. Ive filled the reservoir with hydraulic fluid, but ive never had a use for it.

I am getting ready to start repairing my tractor, does any one know where I could find a expanded view of the tractor and all the parts that would need to be removed to repair the belley pump?

Lots of pics on my website on teardown.

Click on Belly Pump Removal.

You can get a parts break down on the CaseIH website, do a search for parts and enter farmall H.
