Problem with points on 400

In the quest to figure out what went wrong with the 400, I decided to rule out the points in the distributer. When I got to them, they're burnt crooked. So I replaced the points & condenser. Two problems arose. The condenser is too fat to put the dust cover back on & I can't get the points to sit straight. Apperantly, that's why the old ones wore down on an angle. Either the breaker post is worn or the hole on the breaker point is too big. Was I given the wrong kit? Am I not seeing something right? Sumthin' don't add up. - Mike

If the condenser is too "fat" you have wrong one, but as far as points, it is almost always necessary to do a little bending of the stationery point to get good alignment. I still have an old delco remy alignment tool I use all the time. Another thing, ninety percent of the insulators are broke off at the top when guys put in new points. It will work fine that way if you are careful to make sure spring is tightened down square, but it is just something that erks me so I normally always put in a new one if broke. Some are even put in upside down. If the wear bar on points don't contact cam evenly post is bent,or cam is bad otherwise you should be able to align them with a little due care. I take dist off to replace points, very difficult to get a good job when it is on tractor.

Probably the wrong kit. At my formerly IH and now Kubota dealer, everytime they ordered points for my 77 140 (c123 engine) I would get a tuneup kit for a c152 engine.
The computer said they were the same - but they aren't.

Was going thru a TSC store and saw a set of points/condenser in the discard bin that looked right - they found them loose with no part number.Paid $22.00 for them I think, they just scanned some other kit for a price

Put them in my 140 and it runs good spark now.

I think they gave you the wrong kit. Here's that garden tractor you said would make a good plow tractor. Hal

My apologies, El Toro, I almost forgot. It's been a busy year (I think it started last year) & my head is spinnin'. That is one sharp looking plow tractor. Pardon my ig'nance, but what's that blue handle fer? I also noticed there's no wheel weights. Is that a heavy little tractor? Looks like you've plowed a bit, judging by the shine on the moldboard. As for the points kit, yeah, it's kinda lookin' like the wrong one. What with it being Sunday & all... I guess I'll have to put off 'till tomorrow, what I ought to do today. *sigh* - Mike

Yep, it's an IH. I'm thinking of swiping the one off my W6 to see if that cures my initial problem of running for a minute & dying. Ha! With my luck & the dealership closed today, that won't work either.

That I did & this is what I get for not hunting down a NOS set. Junk. NAPA is an easy one to forget when dealing with tractors. I may just go there & see if they don't have one of them new-fangled solid state ignition kits. Maybe a schnazzy chrome 3 ohm coil, too. The 400 is, after all, my hotrod.

That blue handle is for tilting the plow point. The lower you place the handle the deeper the plow will plow. I only use a weight on the left wheel since the weight of the tractor has shifted to the right side when plowing. The plow is off an old Viking walk behind garden tractor. I gave $15.00 for the tractor, plow, disk and cultivator. I kept the plow when I sold the tractor. To get the plow to work on the Wards tractor I had to make a template of the handles and drawbar from the Viking. Then made that frame. The handle for tilting the point stays on the frame. The plow is secured to the frame with (2) 3/8 cap screws and a big safety pin that secures the link to the depth handle. I bought that Viking in 1960 and the plow was made around 1936. That date was on the tractor's handlebars. Hal
