Cub thermo-syphon cooling (cleaning)

Hi all, I would like some suggestions on flushing and cleaning the radiator and engine on a Cub that I think is running too warm. Unless someone can give me an idea of what the normal operating temp would be. The motor cuts out under load when operated for a while. Seems to run fine when cold under load. No radiator leaks or overflow, just seems hot to me. Might be ignition, but I replaced contacts and condensor last season. What temp would be normal? can check with infrared thermometer, but not sure of best place to check temp. Thanks

I agree probably the coil

take the fitting loose from the block that goes to the lower hose on the radiator
stick a hose up in there and rinse out the best you can
take the top hose loose at the head and flush the engine block

the cub with the thermosyphon system will have hot water at the top of the radiator and cold at the bottom

good luck

I agree with the others, its probably a bad coil. IMHO, IH didn"t put a heat guage on most of the thermo-syphon cooling systems for a reason-the engineers didn"t want you to know how hot it is running. Keep the radiator clean and don"t worry about it-as long as it doesn"t boil over, the water circulates, the fan works and it doesn"t leak all over the place, you should be good-to-go. Just remember that Cub has been put through a lot of work with that thermo-syphon system for lots of years. (My $0.02 worth. jal-SD)
