Question about IH 544 fuel system and carburetor?

I have a IH 544 that I am having problems getting
to start after I had the motor rebuilt. The carburetor seems to be flooding its self out. The
tractor will not fire. I am getting good spark on
at the plugs and it does fire but won"t stay
running when I spray carburetor cleaner or starter
fluid in the intake. The governor is not hooked up
and I can flip the throttle on the carburetor but
it still won"t fire. I had the old carburetor
rebuilt and nothing. I just placed on a newer
carburetor a friend gave me and nothing. There is
an electric fuel pump hooked up to this and from
what I understand that is not original. I was told since this has a intake/exhaust manifold it was originally gravity or vacuum feed. I would like to
how to get the carburetor to stop flooding itself
out and if someone has pictures what the original
fuel system looked liked and how it worked? I have
included pictures of fuel system and carburetor.
Many thanks to all who can help me here. I have
been trying to get this tractor running for over a
year now. Also I would like to know if it is ok for me to cut the choke cable to fit properly? Even with old carburetor it was about 16 to long and most was shoved up under the dashboard.

I would desconect all that stuff that doesnt belong there. There shouldnt be any thing between the carb. and the fuel tank so try to bypass all that stuff and see if it helps. Also try blowing some air in the line that goes to the tank and put clean new gas in the tank if you havent already done that. Hope that helps Erik..

The electric fuel pump will unseat the needle and pump raw gas as fast as it can. This is a gravity feed systum only.

Thanks guys! It did run with all this on it before it got a cracked block. Also would it be fine to leave a in-line filter on it with the sediment bowl?

Advance yer timing a little and see if it helps.

If it's "trying" but just can't seem to do it, 9 times out of 10 the darned timing is slow.

Especially after a rebuild.

Its probably better if you take the in line filter out. Some run fine with it but others dont. The sedement bowl should catch most of the dirt if there is any. There should be a screen in the top of the bowl.

I am not ruling out timing cause it does want to run but just won't. I removed all the junk and have it set up as a gravity feed system. Good news is that It will fire now with fuel (gas) and not just starter fluid. I drained the bowl and the flooding issue might not be an issue now. It will only fire when I keep the starter button pushed in. Also when it does fire it seems to be missing or firing every other time. It kind of fires in waves or little burst of 2 to 4 times then won't. The last time I checked I was getting good spark at each plug. Now I am not sure if I have a wire or two flip flopped but I am sure I didn't. For the timing I don't know how to set it. I know I can turn the distributor to get it speed up or slow down. All the timing is internal gears. So I have come a baby step forward here and just need my tractor to fire on time with out the starter being held in

I have an IH 544 and I am very happy with this tractor for my acreage. I am assuming you have this problem solved but in case you dont - have you checked the fuel solenoid shutoff?? It could very well be that the pin is blocking the fuel from the mainjet - it looks like it is electrically disconnected in your pics which is fine - but you have to make sure the fuel isnt shutoff. Your problem sounds like it might be with that solenoid. Don't you just love how they engineered the sediment bowl exactly above the starter on this model..... I feel lucky i haven't burned myself up yet. My tractor stays outside most of the time unfortunately. I just put Red-Coat in the fuel tank and even in the fuel line and carb to prevent the rust from building up. Works like a charm. This tractor purrs like a kitten with everything set up on it. I recently replaced my solenoid - when it failed I disconnected it a few years ago and blocked the shutoff pin open - most ppl end up doing this. But when I went to drain the bowl recently for the application of the redcoat - the solenoid assembly broke on me. The new solenoid has infant mortality - idk if I will bother replacing it.....

But that is exactly how your tractor will behave if this fuel shutoff solenoid isnt working. It will just act like it isnt getting fuel - it will run off of starting fluid or gas in the intake. Thats how I figured out the new solenoid wasnt working.... Oooooh - it acts like its not getting gas - so i checked the solenoid and sure enough - brand new out of the box - it wont open with electrical signal..... Wired it open and now - runs perfect.
